Every company is becoming tech-infused. We've entered what has been dubbed the 4th Industrial Revolution by the World Economic Forum: a merging of the physical, digital and biological world. Those who don't want to learn how to build, manage or at least leverage these technologies will be left behind. 14% of jobs in OECD countries are likely to be automated in the near future, while another 32% are at high risk of being partially automated (1).

Higher-order cognitive skills such as complex problem solving, originality, quantitative analysis, and statistical skills will become central [1], as well as skills in self-management such as active learning, resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility (1). There's a 34% growth in demand for technology and socio-emotional skills is expected in Europe by 2030 (1). In a world where ChatGPT can already now write most of your child's essays in decent quality to pass, higher-order cognitive skills such as complex problem solving, originality, quantitative analysis, and statistical skills will become central [1], as well as skills in self-management such as active learning, resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility (1).  Simultaneously, ever-present dopamine-spiking digital media and its resulting focus, physical and mental health issues (1) create challenges for the self-regulation needed to develop such skills. If one doesn't know the scientific strategies for building self-regulation, one becomes enslaved both to procrastination and the technology products others design, rather than their master. Resilience and stress management will become even more crucial, too (1). 

Your child will change jobs every x years. Re-skilling and upskilling will be an ongoing element of their lives.  They will have to be incredibly adaptable, plus able to handle a mix of remote and in-person work as well as traditional plus temporary gig economy self-employment. There will be less hierarchy in organisations, requiring everyone to think like a leader and at times even like an entrepreneur. They will hence need to deeply know themselves - their strengths, weaknesses, values, purpose - as well as have strong socio-emotional skills to navigate this career jungle. They need confidence and determination to create their own employment and to manage their careers in new ways. 

With evergrowing global access to education and the internet, professional competition skyrockets. The number of applications to top US universities increased by 88% in the last decade. Similarly, the average number of applicants per US job opening nearly tripled between 2010-2018. The number of new college graduates entering the job market has increased by 26% since 2010. Strategic upskilling is the only way to remain relevant.
